Here’s how the relevant passage reads in the official transcript on Schumer’s website:
And let me be clear: the violence in Anbar has gone down despite the surge, not because of the surge.
The lack of protection for these tribes from al Qaeda made it clear to these tribes, “We have to fight al Qaeda ourselves.”
Follow the link to see how he rephrased that on the Senate floor
Two possibilities: either Schumer delivered the line as prepared and is now trying to rewrite the speech after the fact to hide the evidence or else the transcript reflects the version that was prepared for delivery and Schumer reworked the line on the floor to make it more damning of the military. Either way, we have a discrepancy between the official version and the actual version of a key passage to which he clearly paid some attention. Why?

It's simple, brother, the Dems have to politicize this because they got nothing. They tried the economy, but it's the best ever. They tried jobs, but unemployment is the lowest ever. They tried health care, but even they know that's the first step to communism. So what else they got? Nothing.
So they send their "safe" liberals in to say what they all really feel, but they can distance themselves from later when necessary.

Schumer is an idiot who truly thinks he is right because he is backed by a bunch of old, rich NYC women who have elbowed their way into becoming the political elite of their little corner of the world. Weirdos. All of them.

It is a combination of wanting to lose while a Republican is in office, because they foolishly believe they will win the next election and they don't want to have to do any of the hard stuff... and the want to appease Abdul and Achbar...
They are like the insecure kids in elementary school... affraid that not every person in the whole school will like them.

They cant possibly afford to give any credit to the troops. Their central thesis has been that WE are the problem. So what if it turns them into a bunch of unpatriotic political opportunists rooting against our troops? When in their history has that been a problem for them? (besides election time)

Yeah, I don't agree with their stance on things. I also find it pathetic that Democrats base their whole political campaigns on losing in Iraq. Truly sad. I want to get our soldiers out just as bad as everyone else, but we need to do it honorably.

Either they want us to lose for their own partisan reasons, or they are mouthing off to please their fringe fundraising base, or they truly are uncomfortable with an America that defends itself and fights terrorists.
I find it utterly repulsive. I am disgusted that a person spewing the filth that Schumer does was ever selected to serve in our government.

Outrageous!
Every time I hear that sound bit I think how in other countries that man would be tried for treason.
Funny but he doesn't realize but the very soldiers he dismisses as inept make it possible for him to just that!
