I have two copies of Windows XP installed both on the same partition. Before I installed the second one (for repair purposes) I noticed my total avalible memory was like 950mb or something. Since installing the second OS I noticed it dropped to around 550mb. Is a certain amount of memory being devoted to each OS which in turn is decreasing performance?

No, since only one runs at a time.

However...the second version should have been installed behind a second partition!

Looks that way.

Personally, I would have said that 'only-the-running' OS would consume resources (aside from disk space, naturally!), I may have been proved wrong.

Interesting!
