A book is a book; Thus this word applies as much for the Bible, a dictionary, a novel, an essay or anything else is made up of pages and a cover.
Then, a novel is a story published as a book. A novel is a fiction in most instances since it happens that true stories are introduced as "novels" for legal or else reasons.
A true story may be a biography, an autobiography, or--a novel. When a novel comes from the mind of its author, then it is called a fiction.
Other books on history, politics, economics, computers, or anything else whose purpose is to teach something or to tell true stories are called "essay."

No matter how you look at it, a book is a book. You join a 'book club' not a novel club. It can be non-fiction, fiction, cookbook, how to book... etc... The very bottom line is: It's called a book.
Barnes & Noble/Waldenbooks/Borders... These are all ... Yep you got it, bookstores....
Take a look at this:
http://www.amazon.com/Non-Fiction-Novels/lm/KDRVCI7NFOXF
Now this:
http://fiction.eserver.org/novels/
Go to Amazon and click on the arrow next to Search... about the fifth line down you'll see the word 'books.' See? Books are books and there is no difference. The only difference in a book is the 'genre.'

Although one of the meanings for novel is book, it normally means a story narration in a new form. On the other hand book is a generic name which includes novels too.

A book can be a book of poems, a scrap-book, a book of short stories, biography, autobiography, school book, anything. A book is an object.
A novel is a special kind of book. It tells a story. It can be invented, or true. It is a "type" of literature, and a book is just...a book.

A novel is a prose book that is always fiction. A book can be anything that is printed, bound, and usually sold: novels, biographies, autobiographies, histories, military remembrances, collections of short stories, letters, poems, etc. Books!!! A dictionary is a book, too. They come in very handy for this type of question.
