The door in my son's room used to squeek, so we WD-40'd it. But now, it swings all the way open - you can't just leave it ajar. Any tricks for getting a door to stay ajar without jamming something under it to stop it? My son is 2 years old and is potty training so we don't want him to try and open the door wider to get out to the bathroom and then have the door jammed up with a door stopper. Any thoughts?

Old trick to use is pull out the middle hinge pin, set it on a hard surface like plate metal or concrete and pound the center with a hammer enough to bend it slightly....then re-install the pin...you may have to pound it in the hinge halves a little. The bent pin will now cause the door to have some friction when opening and will keep it in place or ajar.

If it is a house or building door, get a door closer, one of those devices at the hardware store which act to slow down the movement of the door. It is also possible that your house or trailer is tilted, and needs to be levelled, using house jacks. If this is your vehicle, you had better try to park on a level. If you do find yourself parking so gravity pulls at the door, all you can do is to hold it before you open it, and control the swing.

Loosen the bottom hinge on the frame side and shim it out about 1/8 inch with cardboard it might help.Your hinges may be warped a bit.

loosen the hinges on the door (not the frame) and slightly pivot the door and hold it tight while you retighten the screws

sometimes this will make the door hinges a little pinched and will keep the door from swinging free

This is pretty difficult to fix without rehanging the door or getting a new one ($25-30) and hanging it properly.

It swings open because it isn't level.
