I have a box turtle and i'm thinking of getting an iguana but I need to know if its safe to have them together. I don't want to have to break up any fights. :o

Well, i've been told that the particular iguana i'd like to buy is very friendly around other animals (except dogs) but my box turtle can be a bot aggressive. When our Yorkie starts barking at him, instead of hiding in his shell he actually starts moving towards him. No, i'm not joking. This guy at the pet store said he's never seen a turtle do that before. :o

I wouldn't put the 2 together ....They are both from diffrent geographical regions and climates and they both carry "diffrent" orginisms such as digestive mites, worms, respitory infection, exc.. One may be able to live with them with no problem but the other it could kill them......I have raised reptiles 4 25+ years and this was one thing I found out the hard way with putting African and American lizards together in the same tank....The American lizards all died.......So I wouldn't put them together as one may get sick, and "reptile" vets are not cheap..........

I think this depends on the personality of the animals, I personally wouldnt keep anything together as you can never be sure. My ig is quite friendly but not all are so you dont know what your getting until youve got it and got to know its personality!

If they were seperated it would be fine but it depends if either of them are free roaming.

Box Turtles can be aggressive, that is not surprising.

In general, we do not mix animals if they...
- need different habitats, and/or
- come from different continents.

Both of these apply here. Iggies like heat and high humidity, while Eastern boxies, for example, like mild temps and high humidity- and, of course, they come from different continents.

The different continents bit is a disease issue- minor diseases from one continent can devistate animals from another continent. We often see this with respiratory infections.
