Most people don't want to suffer, and especially not as a favor to someone else.

(I think the phrase is a way to ask a favor, the favor most likely being to listen to an opinion.)

It fell out of common usage for a reason.

It means "permit me".
Examples are:
Suffer me not, O God, my God, to be kept back from the heaven of Thy bounties and the daystar of Thy favors.
Oh Savage Beauty, suffer me to pass!
Suffer me to be the food of wild beasts,
Suffer the Little Children to Come Unto Me means "permit the children to come to me"
