Having been introduced to Bel Canto Tenor Mario Lanza and Beethoven's symphonies at age 4 or 5, it was only a matter of time I discovered Italian opera. When I heard Pavarotti for the first time I fell in love. Didn't matter what his divo reputations were at the time (mid 70's). Ever since then, whenever I need cheering up I'd listened to his singing.
Here is my my top 10 list and I like best when he is paired with Mirella Freni, another Italian diva for obvious reasons.
1. Tosca by Giacomo Puccini, with Mirella Freni. One of my favorite aria is "E Lucevan Le Stelle", heart wrenching and entirely moving.
2. La Bohème (Puccini), again with Mirella Freni. Listen to this famous aria "Che gelida manina" and you'll know why he is Divo. At his best with this tender interpretations.
3. L'Elisir D'Amore by Gaetano Donizetti, with Kathleen Battle. A must to listen is "Una furtiva lagrima". I fell in love with his voice with this song.
4. A lesser known (or may be not) 'I Pagliacci' by Ruggero Leoncavallo, with Mirella Freni, Herbert von Karajan. Three of the bests in classic history. Try the Pavarotti's highlight "Vesti la giubba".
5. La Figlia del Reggimento (Donzetti), again with Freni. Cannot fail to mention this opera since he earned world fame with 9 high C's singing "Ah mes amis" - "Pour mon Ãme" during Act I.
6. Aida by Giuseppe Verdi at the San Francisco Opera. What can I say. It's Aida.
7. Requium (Verdi), with Leontyne Price, Herbert von Karajan at the La Scarla. Awesome casts indeed! Listen to the whole thing if you can.
.
8. Macbeth (Verdi), I don't there was a production with Pavarotti, I am only aware of the recording of highlights. Try "O Figli Miei ..., Ah, La Paterna Mano".
9. Rigoletto (Verdi) with Joan Southerland. My favorite is "Ella Mi Fu Rapita! Parmi Veder Le Lagrime".
10. La Traviata (Verdi), again with Southerland. Try "Lunge Da Lei.... De' Miei Bollenti Spiriti".

Although I never attended one, the exerpts I viewed on TV were incredible. Opera is a showcase for magnificent voices and relentless training and Pavarotti was an ideal demonstration of it.

Donizetti's La Fille Du Regiment; the aria "Pour Mon Ame". His lilting beautiful voice hitting the high notes with vigor. I also love his devilish Duca in Rigoletto. I am JUST listening to William Tell, which is apparently an INCREDIBLE demonstration of his alacrity. Please do not limit us to one!! The man is too big for that. What a joy to listen to.

I like the one he most liked himself, his signature Arie, Nessun dorma from Puccinis Turandot.
Don't miss the Public Broadcasting Tribute to him Sunday night at 8:00 O'Clock.

its not a recording but a late performance ... where he was having hip problems and had difficulty moving .... it was a Tosca ... he was in magnificent vocal form and he not only portrayed the emotional content with his voice but with as many movements that he could manage ... the staging allowed him to limit his movements .... he was wonderful
