Oh JEEEEZE...Lighten up!!!
Of course these characters can be gay, lets look at them
Tinky Winky- Purple with a gay pride symbol, how could that not be gay? and the red purse...DIVALICIOUS!
Peppermint Patty-Softball is a huge tip-off, as well as her "best friend" who calls her "Sir"
Bert and Ernie-two grown puppets living together, sleeping in the same room and dont you love the coordinating striped shirts?
Winnie The Pooh-COME ON! He doesn't even wear pants, and he is a little TOO obsessed with Christopher Robin
Velma- Velma Velma, She might not even be aware of it, but Velma is all about Daphne, Not Fred
My Icon from Childhood Johnny Quest, Living with 2 hunky males, and that cute little Indian boy Haji

*not gay, just saw this while posting on R&S*

Whoa, Nelly!
Peppermint Patty's a dyke?
I knew something was up with Bert and Ernie, and right off the bat I figured Spongebob was funny.
I never thought 2 much about Winnie the Pooh, but I always figured his buddy Christopher Robbins was a homo.
Tinky Winky... that horse has been beaten way past its death.
Velma? Really, I figured she was just 2 square 2 get a man.

Wow...I too am not gay. In fact I'm not sure I knew what "gay" was until Rock Hudson died. I also freely admit I have NO idea what a gay man would look to as an icon...as far as cartoon characters and children's show personalities go. However, I'll offer my opinion on the "gayness" of these characters from a hetero point of view.

I never pegged Bert & Ernie as gay. Bert liked oatmeal, pigeons, and bottle cap collecting...hardly "Gay" hobbies....lame hobbies, but not gay. Ernie liked Rubber Duckie and baths with Rubber Duckie...no straight boy likes taking a bath, so maybe Ernie was a bit gay. Neither, however was lip syncing to Madonna or Abba.

The sexuality of Peppermint Patty, Marcie, and Velma has long been debated. Even in the newest Scooby-Doo cartoons on Boomerang (and they are good..no f-ing Scrappy!) Velma is a bit butch. None of them however have ever come out.

Spongebob and Tinky Winky are too late for me. I've seen one Spongebob show ever and never watched the Teletubbies. I can't offer any opinions.

Pooh Bear...from a straight man's perspective, doesn't come off as gay. Tigger...now he might be a little light in the loafers. Christopher Robin however, is really gay. The kid wears Mary Janes for god's sake. I would have beat the snot out of him on the playground just because of those shoes.

Vanity Smurf...there's one you forgot. The cat carries around a mirror and wears a flower in his hat. That's textbook gay...to a hetero like myself.

Hasn't anyone ever wondered about Mr.Rodgers? The guy lives alone, changes his shoes and jacket/sweater as soon as he get's home and puts them away neatly I might add. He plays with puppets in the Land of Make Believe.....c'mon.

Now...I know four guys who are fully out of the closet and a few who have to be gay but won't come out. I'm no expert in what a gay man thinks, but in conversation, none of them ever admitted they related to the aforementioned characters. Three of the four were devout Madonna fans. Two of those also watched a lot of Jem and Josie and the Pussycats. The other one of the four was really into musicals and opera...stereotypical, yes, but a fact. He used to watch GI Joe and Transformers right along with us hetero kids and always had to be COBRA or the Decepticons whenever we played with our toys. A gay boy who admired Cobra Commander and Megatron....hmmmm.

Now that I hink about it, Cobra Commander is sort of modled on Hitler, and Hitler's sexuality is also something if debate.

Me personally..I always looked up to Yukon Cornelius.

I don't stereotype any of those as being "gay icons". This is part of the problem with our community. When I was a child I liked Winnie and Oscar the grouch. When my straight sibling was a child he loved Ernie and Bert and Spiderman.

Good question.

def peppermint patty. so butch!

to all the question haters - what's so wrong about saying some of the characters are gay icons? if AT LEAST 10% of the world is gay, why can't 10% of childhood characters be gay? i mean, the kids are gonna see gays anyway. and these characters are all of ambiguous ages theselves. in the very least Velma is grown enough to be out and proud!
