hello I am wondering how much school counselors make during the year..elementary, jr. high and high school. ??and if they only work 9 months out of the year. (summer's off)
I work as an advisor at a college now and i absolutely love it. However I want to go for my masters in education and im thinking about counseling because i really like what I do now. I don't want to get a masters in teaching because I have been told that having a bachelors in elem/sec education pays the same as if you have a masters. (my bachelors is in business/finance). I would like to teach but at the university level. After my masteres I am thinking of getting my Ph.D. in TESL to teach english to foreign students. However I can't find schools who have a Doctorate program for Teaching English to Other Language speakers...

any ideas? :) thank YOU

A PhD in TESL? Come on, it doesn't take 4 years of graduate school to obtain such skills. There aren't many places in this country or job offers at all that offer TESL. If you still want to be TESL-certified, you can do so by taking classes online. (That's the only time I would recommend taking online courses.) Go to www.tesolonline.com
At the graduate level you should get a PhD in the subject that you actually want to teach. How else are you going to obtain the knowledge required to become a professor at the university level? Perhaps you can get a PhD in English. And then you can take TESL classes online after you graduate.

Usually salary schedules are based on the educational level of the educator and the number of years of experience. Secondary school counselors and high school counselors are usually paid based such a salary schedule. Perhaps the elementary counselors either have more education or more experience or both. That's the only explanation I can think of.

If you're thinking of getting paid more, you should gain more working experience in teaching English. Usually in educational line, experience is extemely valued. Of course, you can still pursue your Ph.D in TESL in the meantime. Go to a private instituition. It saves more time and it's more flexible. Good luck!
