For making it easy :
1) To build up again foreign relationship with those countries, and helping building a western alliance. In any way Germany, Italy and Japan were , at least , big industrial countries..
2) To help new-born democratic government. We could say it was a successfully "Export of democracy" , even if at least Germany and Italy had a democratic experience before.
3) To help also American Economy. WW I taught that, if you don't help the looser, they can't buy your good, and market became more little and drives to economic crash (see 1929..) This economic help was also, if not mostly for some industry, invested in american goods.... Alos ships of food and cereals from USA were s sort of Nation Help to american agricolture.
4) For humanitarian reasons: at the end , especially toward Europe, savage bombings have destroyed much of the roots of many USA citizen (Nurberg, Montecassino, Wien etc...).And there were an authentic feeling for helping those poor countries.

The US was worried about the growth of radical elements what would have occurred in the poverty resulting form the wholesale destruction of Europe and Japan. The US wanted to control/influence as many nations as possible. Think Manifest Destiny 2.5.
The US government and US corporations also made a lot of money through the rebuilding effort. It gave industry a chance to transition from peak wartime demand to civilian production. There are documented instances of areas of France, Germany, and the Balkans that were simply waiting to surrender to the first American or British forces that came around which received devastating bombing attacks. In WWII, strategic bombing was not precision and had very little effect on troops in bunkers, but did destroy factories and homes.

It was a way of controlling the fate of the countries to avoid a repeat world war. As the WWII has already proven, post-war poverty and instability can result in the wrong people taking charge and the remobilization of the economy towards war. However, US led reconstruction were designed to disarm all or as much as possible the ability of the recipients' ability to mobilize for another war and promotes prosperity of industries that can not easily be converted into a war industry. Basically, the US was afraid the instability seen in Germany after WWI would be repeated so they decided to help out.

What do you mean 'feel compelled'?. Those nation rebuilt with their effort. If the US did, why US gave up Vienam? How about South Korea? They were under military regime until the end of 80s. Iraq and Afgan are still in chaos and having city battles with your troops until now.
