They don't want this good feeling story to be tarnished so they are making 1 million excuses for Rick Ankiel. Meanwhile when it wasn't proven that Bonds did it almost everyone bashed him even though he didn't fail a MLB steroid test. I'm not saying Bonds didn't do it but i do see the obvious doublestandard of him being found guilty by the media & many fans while looking the other way or making excuses all of a sudden for Rick Ankiel. Many of these same fans who bashed Bonds for months are now all of a sudden defending Rick Ankiel. Obvious hypocrisy & doublestandard? Looks that way to me.

Excellent point, you have heard that old saying "all things being equal" well, I can tell you that "all things are never equal" as pointed out by you in this example. I just want to remind Brettj that Bonds admitted he used a substance that could have been a steroid but that occurred in 1999 which was long before the drug policy was implemented by MLB. This is exactly the same situation with Ankiel, his use of HGH was before it found its way to the banned substance list. I challenge anyone to explain why they believe the drug testing policy implemented by MLB is a joke.

Great question, Ankiel is a feel good story and it is a great story of a comeback but it's no different. To be honest though if both he and Bonds did this before this was a banned substance then it's not cheating. Baseball and Selig completely messed this up for everyone including the fans by not having a stern policy before it was way too late. Robert, stop being naive and come into the real world. If Ankiel bought the stuff then I'm sure they're not in a box collecting dust in his closet.

Please everyone get off the whole Bonds never tested positive bit. Bonds himself admitted to taking steroids.

With that said, Ankiel was linked to an HGH investigation back in 2004. This was while he was trying to make it back into the league immediately after his two arm surgeries.

Bonds did it because he was upset McGwire and Sosa were hitting more homeruns.

For me a comparison might be a pair of bank robbers...one stole just enough to eat because he was unemployed and starving, the other stole $100 million because he's just a jerk and wanted to be able to say he pulled off a bigger heist than anyone else.

I don't know but if I were a judge, I'd be far less lenient with the second guy, especially since he's not apologetic about it. And I don't think that's a double standard.

With that said however, if it turns out Ankiel kept taking HGH after he was all healed or is still taking it now, that's a different story. If that turns out to be the case, Ankiel should definitely be suspended and have his stats erased from the books...just as Bonds should have his numbers erased.

Last answer confuses me... I have NEVER read anywhere that Barry Bonds has admitted to steroid use. The time period that the investigation is looking at, they were legal anyway. SINCE MLB made steriod use a violation, Bonds has been tested, and had turned up negative each time.

Rick Ankiel was someone I was unaware of and had to research: All we have now is an ARTICLE about an investigation that says that he purchased a 12 month supply of HGH. Not that he USED it !!

MLB needs to have a solid testing system, and when a player pops-positive, they should be retested, then GONE.

This was written By Jeff Passan from Yahoo! Sports about Rick Ankiel:
The author of baseball's greatest story this season – the one guy in whom everyone, Cardinals fans or otherwise, wanted to believe – was allegedly just like Barry Bonds: seeking glory through NEEDLES.

This is ridiculous how he just puts Barry's name in the sentence about using steroids, Rick is the steroid user not Bonds. If and when Barry admits to using performance enhancing drugs we have no right to say that he's a cheater.

This just makes me mad that ESPN and other news programs talk about Rick's story for a little bit and then changes the subject. This guy was supposed to be the good guy, the player you would want on your team, the comback kid. Now he's a STEROID USER and people are just overlooking it and just saying to themselves "oh too bad."

I actually like Rick Ankiel I remember watching him in the playoffs a few years back and how he ruined his career with those wild pitches and now he's back hitting homers left and right. The fact that he took HGH or had a perscription for it back in 2004 doesn't change my opinion on him. Thats old news; media get over it. But I can't help to think that if this was Barry Bonds(whose situation is very similar accused of HGH use before the ban) there would probably be over 100 comments on how Barry is the scum of the earth and how he's cheat and that his head is big, he stupid, a jerk and everything in between. We give excuses for who we like no matter what they do but we bash the ones we dislike. Don't get it but what can you do about it.

There is no test for HGH in baseball so Rick Ankiel is still taking this stuff. The commissioner better not go to any Cardinal games and put an asterisks on all the home runs that Ankiel has hit along with the games the Cards have played.

Bonds and Ankiel cant even be compared.

Bonds has the ego the size of San Fran.

Ankiel has a ego the size of a pea.

Yes, I see you're excact point. In baseball the media is either on you're side or not on you're side. They were on Ankiels side and left him alone. Bonds is a completley different story.

But, you cant blame Rick Ankiel for taking sterioids, it was still legal. Who do you blame? A man named Bud Selig.

But, you can blame him as a person for ever getting near those dreadful drugs.

Besides, if you made one huge mistake in you're life that ripped you're reputation as a player and a person wouldnt you want a 2nd chance? I thought so.

P.S. I love you're squirell! Hopefully he will be back on the pole when the Yankees get back to the Staidum.

You are correct. But I will say the difference between the two was that Bonds was considered a jerk by the media and fans long before he was accused of using HGH. Once the HGH story hit people used it as another reason to dislike Barry even more.

Rick Ankiel was some kid that got desperate and did whatever he could to stay in the game of baseball. His sad MLB career just got sadder.

Let's keep things in perspective. I'm not an Ankiel supporter, but he's not chasing the most hallowed record in American sports and then lying about potential steroid use.. When Ankiel gets to 700 home runs and says he never used steroids while his head is bigger than a beachball, then you'll see an avalanche of criticism. To compare Barry Bonds to Rick Ankiel is ridiculous.

Racism at its finest, enough said. Bonds is a black man who the media doesn't like while Ankiel is a "great story" because he's "overcoming" obstacles. What a bunch of horsesh!t! And before I'm accused of being a pissed off black man who is crying discrimination, let me point out I'm a white male. The stuff with Bonds is all classic racism. Palmeiro lies to the government and gets away with it somehow, Canseco openly admits how he cheated and essentially stole the MVP award in 1988 yet these 2 clowns get a pass by the media and a good portion of the fans while Bonds is shadowed and shunned by everyone.

I've said all along Ankiel is a f'n joke and I'm honestly thrilled this came out about him. Deception and corruption must run in his family as his father is in federal prison on a drug charge with a 15 year sentence. How lovely.
