I know someone who works for Dollar General and they were told that if they do not solicit donations for a third party non profit organization they will be fired.

If he doesn't have an employment contract he is an "at-will" employee. (He could also be protected if he is a member of a union). If he's at-will an employer can fire him for any reason that is not federally prohibited (or State law depending on where you live). Usually that only entails protection for... at most... race, sex, religion, sometimes sexual orientation. So........ in short your friend is pretty much out of luck. An employer can fire you for no reason.

If they agreed to do that when they took the job the employee must solicit the donations. If they can prove they did not know about that when they were hired (should be in writing) than I don't believe the company could get away with it. State laws differ but I suspect most would be this way.

Is that the reason they will give? I doubt it, but they can always find a reason. Most states are "right to work" states, which means you can be fired for any reason, as long as it is legal (can't be fired for sex, race, age, etc).

I wouldn't dought it. There is no Union to help the workers anymore. Companies can do what ever they wont to there employees. They have even forced workers with a long standing in there company to take up to 40% pay cuts.
But every one thinks all is great in the states. I sure wish i new what drugs they were taking.........

If you are an at-will employee you can be fired for any reason, unless you can show your termination is "against public policy" (Example--you can't be fired for doing jury duty).

An employer, in the US, can fire an employee for any reason, except discrimination.

it may be construed as intimidation. a complaint to the wage and hour division of the dept of labor may be possible.

No they cannot, unless it was written in their job description. that would be wrongful termination.
