I went on craigslist.com and there are alot of companies hiring for typists who work from home. How does the pay work? is it direct deposit usually? do you have to pay a start up fee?

Never, ever pay for a job like this. If they genuinely want workers, they will pay YOU and not ask for anything up front.
Genuine jobs do NOT involve typing addresses onto envelopes, they should mean real typing of manuscript to document. They may ask for a sample of your work first.
