If you care about whether your website is available to others, then before you post it to the world and "embarrass" yourself by its public appearance, you need to check it out in (believe it or not, groan!) several versions of several browsers on several computers, to see "real world" conditions! AT VERY LEAST try it on several browsers - you can get all major browsers free (IE, Firefox, Opera, Safari), then, say, go to your neighborhood Publi Library and try it on THEIR computer for a different perspective, and maybe watch as grandma tries it on her computer to see if she finds it as easy to use as YOU think it is!

As in any other program, a website can have lots of bugs, wrong links, possibilities for crackers to penetrate, other security flaws, etc. It depend on what website you work though... If it's a personnal page, there is no such need, but if it's a commercial website, with shopping carts and that there are credit card numbers manipulated, you better have it crackerproof. That's the reason why the Hacker Safe certification exists : http://www.scanalert.com/

Even if your site is static - there is no programmed interactivity - you still need to test your website displays correctly across different browsers, platforms and devices. Not everyone uses the same hardware and software to view web pages and this can effect how the page is displayed.
If your site is driven by a database - you may sell products online for example - you need to test it works as you'd like it to.
