My son is turning 10 months old and I try to put him in his walker and turn cartoons on and put him near the T.V. but he will not watch them. He won't hardly play with his toys. He wants us to hold him and play with him every minute each day. It's exhausting. What can I do to get him to do other things?

well, good for him for not watching cartoons. television stunts their creativity......maybe you should try letting him play with the pots and pans in the kitchen.....no joke...kids love the noise it makes......

Cartoons are too complex for a 10 month old, so that is probably why your son is not watching them. You have to be careful also because TV can be overstimulating for some babies. If you really need a break and would like him to watch short periods of TV, then I would try simple programs that include music...the Baby Einstein DVD's are often entertaining for children that age...select the ones for 6 months to 1 year. It is exhausting keeping a child that age entertained...hang in there! It gets better around 1 yr. of age when they start to become a little more independent. Try introducing household objects to your baby that are safe...these are often so much more entertaining for babies than toys. Good luck!

at 10 months old your son does not understand the TV, it is ok that he doesn't watch.

Playing with toys, sounds like you have let him be totally dependant on you for all his stimulation. Some kids need constant stimulation and some are self sufficient. Let him have time on the floor with his toys, maybe noisy bright toys, if he does not like it, let him lay there an extra 2 minutes the first day, extra 3 minutes the next day and so on, hopefully he will eventually learn to be self sufficent

If this does not work, maybe you should start going to a play group, so he can learn from other children how to play.

Good Luck

My son didn't watch TV until he was about 2 1/2. He is 3 1/2 and he still only does about 15 min at a time. Don't force it because when he is older you will wish he won't watch as much. Try turning on some music, maybe he will bounce to the rhythm. Or it will help to dround out the crying when you don't pick him up as much.

The baby can't understand the words or moving drawings that only represent an actual thing. it's better not to get your baby taddicted to television. Instead set him up in a play are by himself with some books and toys. He may enjoy trying something new developmentally like a sippy cup with water, or a baby sppon and bowl. Total neglect is not an option if he is awake and you want time alone. But, you can be in the same room without having to have contact with him always. Also, My daughter was very needy at this age and so I used the time to get two birds with one stone. It was fun for me and focused on my hobby to dress her in cute clothes and take pictures, she liked the camera and I liked to have the time with her.

good luck.

Put him on the floor in a safe area and let him learn how to play on his own. If he cries -give him a hug and some reassurance that you are nearby and put him back in. Do this repeatedly until child can play on his own for longer and longer times. 10 months old babies will play for about 20 minutes on their own - much longer is asking a lot.

I'm glad he isn't watching tv... babies under the age of 2 shouldn't be watching too much tv.
I know its tiring with a young one, but try other ways of entertaining him.
Pots and pans work, a bouncy excersaucer, a music player, etc.
You also have to help him learn to play alone sometimes.

Good luck

why do you WANT your child to be glued to the television? my friend lets her 2 year old watch the tube until three in the freaking morning...hes glued to it...her excuse is that the shows he watches are educational.but i dont care what show is on..a kid that age and watching that much television?! its bad for them.
like the others said, give him pots and pans..get a refrigerator box or a couple large boxes and let him play in those..paint with bright non toxic colors and shapes so he can look at those.put him in a play pen with some noisy bright toys...

many 10 month olds dont like cartoons. try puppet shows instead.
yes, just put him on the floor & make sure everything around him is safe for babies. let him cry, just dont leave him alone. after a day or two he will get used to it and will find his surroundings fascinating.

A 10 month-old should not be watching TV. It is not good for their development. Wait until they are about 15 months-old at least for Disney or PBS.

doing other things is great... don't push the tv though... it teaches him nothing but to be passive!!

try a play yard with noise makers... give him a lightweight pan and wooden spoon from the kitchen... put the play yard in the same room you are, so he sees you, but can play on his own...

this age loves to "make music" though to me it sounds like a bunch of headache noise!! lol
