My car rattles when I drive it. I really cant tell if its coming from below the car ( i.e.. Cats substrates) .. or the front of the car... maybe timing belt? I hear it when I accelerate- its a sporatic sound. I have a video of the sound while it's happening, Here:

Ive only found 2 possible answers. The Cat Substrates falling apart, or perhaps a worn timing belt? .. Can someone give me a way, besides taking it to the mechanic that I could test these on my own?
Or if you have any other possible alternatives to the problem, that would really help. Please email at mikemd21 at yahoo if you would like to speak with me directly- I'll get RIGHT back to you. I really appreciate your help in advanced

Also, Its definitely not something like, the alignment or brakes that need to be replaced--- I know some people might think that when I wrote " it rattles when i accelerate".. its a much more advanced problem than that.. It can be a soft rattle,- The more i open the throttle up, the more I can hear the sound.. -- sometimes it will make a liar out of me and I wont hear it for the whole trip.. sometimes it will never go away... ... I notice mostly- the sound occurs after the car has been running at least for 5 minutes or so... driving that is.. I normally dont have a problem until then.. I also notice a loss in power when i hear this sound- like the car is being held back or working harder ... Someone please give me any ideas at all....

and One other thing... the check engine light works- but it doesnt come on... - wouldnt it come on if the timing belt was slipping? what about the cat failing? would that cause the check engine light to come on?

Also- I put in premium octane into my car when my mechanic, who couldnt figure it out.. suggested that... and it doesnt help.. .. why does the check engine light not come on? what does that indicate.. would it not come on with a faulty cat... or timing belt?

Are you sure its not engine ping or detonation? Put high octane gas in the vehicle and then wait a couple days. If the noise goes away, you have detonation which can sound like a rattle. If your car is designed for 87 octane and is detonating, then you may have a timing issue, carbon buildup or another issue.

it sounds like the conveter has fallen apart and making the rattle noise, and the pieces can plug the exhaust shut causing a lack of power, or maybe you are hearing a spark knock, causes are cheap gas, needs a tune up or the timing belt might have slipped a tooth, if it has slipped a tooth you wont notice much change in the way it drives but the computer knows it has and it cant adjust the engine the way it should, what kind of car, engine size, miles and when was the last tune up, and if you think the converter is the problem unbolt the exhaust at the manifold and drive it a short distance too see if problem goes away, it will be loud and dont drive it too far but that may tell you what the problem is

i'm additionally balloting for a broken catalytic converter. If the catalyst is broken, it could rattle around and likewise truly clog the exhaust. A vacuum gauge could properly be utilized to examine for a clogged exhaust. connect the gauge to manifold vacuum. start up the engine. The gauge could desire to study around 17-21 or so. Rev the engine to around 2000 rpm and carry it there. If the converter isn't clogged/broken, the gauge could desire to momentarily dip and then at as quickly as return to on the brink of the place it replaced into at idle. If there's a clog, the vacuum will slowly drop off and not at all get well.

I had this same problem on my Blazer. It was a bad catalytic converter that was breaking up inside. My friend had the same rattle and it turned out to be a loose rusted heat shield.

I had the same problem twice. My problem was one or two bad tires. I know it sounds crazy but once they were fixed the problem was fixed. Good luck.
