We self indulgently believe that if it worked for us, Germany and Japan, then it will work for everybody. Surely at some time in our history, we will learn that this absolutely is not the case.

Most of the time they don't, they set up a dictator.

They're not interested in setting anybody free, they just want someone in charge who'll take orders from them.

Democracy in Iraq is a PR stunt. It's not working because, you can either have a free nation there or you can have one that takes orders from Washington. Having both is pretty much out of the question.

But Washington definitely wants the latter. Hence the "importance" of keeping huge numbers of troops there.

Americans don't impose democracy on the world. The US government does. And don't be fooled. US is in Iraq for oil interests, not to promote democracy. Obviously.

We have some very serious political problems in our nation, but I have faith the elections will cure much of it. Pray for it. We are as much prisoners of our government as the Iraqis.

human beings, and particularly George Bush, could desire to first learn that democracy does not recommend Imperialistic expansionism and then study right here Quote till now they declare that they are residing in a democracy themselves. not to show their pretend efforts of exporting it to others. “The philosophers of the democratic Athens had denounced democracy because of the fact the setting up of lack of understanding, envy and chaos.” via: Will Duran

So you're assuming that most people in the world don't want freedom and democracy? It's a small number of people in those countries who wish to retain their monopoly of power who don't want democracy.

Once a democracy or republic is formed, ideally there are free elections and the citizens can vote for the kind of government and leadership they feel would benefit them. I know the system is not perfect, but it's way better than most

If you notice, we don't seem to bother with them unless they have something we really want.
