Use RustSeal by KBS Coatings, like por15 but LESS expensive & comes in more color options. Prep is ALWAYS important. Follow directions.

Clean as much of the rust off as you can and use POR-15 to coat the rusty areas and prevent it from coming back...it can be painted over when done if you want. You have to make sure that it covers all the rusty area to prevent it from oxidizing again. Buy online or at hardware stores/home centers.

My Gramps used to use grease to seal out the water and air that causes rust to begin with, but you may not wanna do that though. I know it works. If its out of sight you may want to give it a try.

clean with a wire brush and protect with WD40, no heavy grease marks and looks cleaner

I know this product works, but you need to apply touch up paint to it for protection against ultraviolet light deterioration:
