It really all depends on the situation. If your disability prevents your body from performing then yes but if you just say I can't do that without trying you are using it as an excuse.

im not saying that there are disabled people that will use it as an excuse but for someone to generalise without knowing the problems is ignorance of the highest order

If could be if you aren't, but some people do use their disabilities as excuses for not trying or accomplishing something.

A disability does not make you helpless or unable to do anything for yourself except in the most severe forms.

If you hear this a lot you might want to take a good hard look at yourself and decide if you are being the best you can be. And if you are - then you might want to start doing some educating about the real nature of your disability to people who make this comment.

I don't think everyone who feels that way is ignorant. There are some people with minor disabilities that could function, and choose not to participate in daily functions of life: working, school, or just the process of making their lives better overall. Even with a disability.

I think it depends on what they are trying to avoid. Many people see that I DO use my disability as an excuse...I am in a wheelchair so my excuse for say, not using the stairs or a revolving door, is my disability....often our disability is our ignorance. It is all in the perception of the disabled person..often we cant see the disability....it may be hidden...not out in the open as is mine..and it is not our business to judge what is a disability and what isnt...I object to those who use the other persons disability to judge that person....she is blind so she cant do something....he is in a wheelchair so he cant do something...that is where the problem lies..we are too quick to disriminate against people who have disabilites who see themselves as capable, despite their misfortune.

I'm disabled. Still, I know for a fact that some people will use their disability as a crutch. They could do more than they do if they actually chose to, but rely on the fact that they are sometimes seen or accepted as not being capable as a means or excuse to do as little as they do. It is sometimes easy to get into that type of mindset for them, to do less because they don't have to.

Skippy say that because many disabled people do use it as excuse, some people think every disabled person do.
Skippy always say being disabled no excuse for not succeeding.

If they are speaking about a specific person, maybe they do use it as an excuse. I'm sure that there are lazy disabled people, just like there are lazy non-disabled people.

hmmm. i have autism. i don't like being around people, children, strange places or in deep water. i panic. i will not drive, because i am afraid of being in control of a moving vehicle. Is that my excuse? no. i am being honest. My " disability" is my own fears, not my autism. People with autism, drive,go places, ( i do too, but I am not comfortable doing so) have kids, ( i do as well, and my kids know what makes me upset and what not to do, or do, as far as i am concerned) live seemingly normal lives. They are not limited to what they can do simply because they are autistic.

yes mostly coz they havent suffered what you have and can never know the truth of discomfort. But somtimes..rarely , a person could be giving you an objective analysis. U got to judge whether its simply idle criticism or a rational opinion.
