I don't think that it has anything to do with measurement. reason being is that i found you question while "googling" "36 on the bottom) - i have an antique vase that has that on the bottom and it's done in the same script that you are describing so...i think it must mean something else. how old is your pitcher do you know?

Aliz may be right, but ignore anything after the first sentence. No one is going to label a pitcher as containing 0.036 litres (36mls).

Note: 1 fluid ounce is slightly less than 34ml. (33.8147ml)

To clarify, the 36 does most likely refer to 36 fluid ounces...IF it is referring to the volume of the pitcher.

In the US it means 36 ounces can be held in that picture. If it is a country where the metric system is used it is 36 mls in the picture.
