It all comes down to genres, so here are some excellet artists from the genres I listen to -
Progressive Rock - Camel, King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull.
Progressive Metal - Dream Theater, Opeth, Meshuggah.
Jazz Fusion - Jaga Jazzist, Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Avant-Garde metal - Peccatum, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Arcturus.
Classic Rock - The Doors, The Who, Beatles.

Why would you base who has better taste in music on gender?...that's a sweeping statement if ever i heard one my taste in music is vast being a musician most of my life i know what i'm talking about whether male or female if you have good taste in music you just do regrdless of gender.

kind of hard to say when i don't know your tastes but i'll try. for country i'd say hank williams jr. for rap i'd have to say either dre or snoop. for rock it would be alice in chains. and for something mellow either grateful dead, phish, or pink floyd. these are all bands that if you buy their cd's all the songs will be good, not just two or three.
