The ancient Greeks knew that the earth was round.
Eratothsenes actually measured it quite accurately, by measuring the angle of the sun at the same time in two different places, and calculating what the circumference of the earth must be. His result was remarkably within about ten % of the correct answer.
BTW, they knew very well in Colubus's time that the earth was a globe, but for political reasons had severely under-estimated the earth's circumference, and when he discovered America, he thought he had reached the Indies , hence 'West Indies" and American "Indians". He didn't know at the time that there was a continent and the Pacific Oean between him and India.
