It was the summer of '64, Me and the fellas were hanging down at Louie's one day when this nobby-kneed kid walked in. I'd seen her before, her old man was a mechanic down at the corner gas station. My old man had gone there every Saturday for the past seven years for a fill-up and the local gossip, and he always took me with him. The kid would always be there too, sitting on a stool behind the counter with a magazine and a soda. She had a pretty smile and always spoke to me shyly, but nothing more than that.

She was cute, I thought, if you liked middle-class Jewish girls. My tastes had always run a little more toward the kind of girls I never brought home to meet my mother.

That summer I had just turned 18 and thought I was God, or the nearest thing to it. My old man had bought me a brand new Chevy for a graduation gift and girls were never in short supply.

I never asked pop what he did for a living, and neither did mom. But my mother got a new fur coat every Christmas, we always were seated at the best tables at the local restaurants, and I always got a wad of money handed to me on Friday nights. Whatever he did, I don't think we really wanted to know. All we DID know was that life was sweet!

On that particular day, when the snub-nosed kid came in to Louie's, me and the boys had been bored most of the day, and I had felt kind of anxious, like I just had some nervous energy to get rid of. So when this kid walked in, with her pale hair pulled back in a ponytail and hot pink lipstick on, I couldn't resist the temptation to stir up a little bit of trouble. Little did I know what I was getting into then!

I was lounged against the counter at the end of the bar, watching as she walked up and ordered a soda. "Hey kid. Your daddy let you out of your playpen for the afternoon?" it was a lame thing to say, but the fellas guffawed, and I puffed out my chest, all confident swagger.

The kid turned toward me, a narrow, disdainful look on her pretty face. "Who are you, a regular Costello?" she asked, popping her gum.

Bolstered by my friends surrounding me, I leaned forward, smiling at her with a wicked wink. "I tell you what, babydoll. If you ever want a private performance, you let me know. That is, if you're not scared what 'daddy' will say." There were more howls of laughter from the guys.

The kid blushed, and my heart gave a little lurch to see it. I realized, for the first time, that the pretty little kid I had seen for years behind that greasy counter had grown into a pretty young woman, and she had filled out in all the right places.

I had just made up my mind to go over to her and apologize when the bell at the door rang and a big guy in a letterman jacket walked in. He glanced over at my friends and I, then made to walk past us, heading toward the jukebox. A moment later my head whipped back around to look at the kid as she shouted, "Johnny!"

The big guy turned, and his eyes lit up as he saw who was walking toward him. "Barb!" he shouted back, and met her in the middle of the malt shop, picking her up in a bear hug before twirling her around in delight. "Okay..." I thought, "...who was the wise guy?" My friends were teasing me, poking me in the ribs and laughing.
I looked back at the couple now hugging in the middle of the floor and was surprised to see the kid smirking at me from over the guys shoulder.

Now, there's one thing I can say about life. This journey I am on has been filled with surprises, but none so much as that day when I found myself standing up and walking toward this big jock with the full intent of beating him up for talking to my girl.

My girl. hmm. Well, I wasn't sure when in the past five minutes I had decided that she was my girl, but I didn't take time to analize then. I marched myself right over to this guy, tapped him hard on the shoulder, and said, "That is a dangerous place to stand, my friend."

The jock 'Johnny' turned around and looked at me in confusion. "Excuse me, can I help you buddy?"

"Yeah, you can start by getting your meaty paws of my girl." I said with all the bravado I could muster. I hoped the goon didn't look down to see my knees knocking.

All my friends had, by now, matching expressions of comical horror on their faces, sure that I was about to get my life ended abruptly by Mr. Johnny the Jock. Barb, my new girl, was wearing a similar expression on her face, and was shaking her head violently back and forth. "Are you crazy? This is-" Suddenly, we heard a VERY loud roar!

We all snapped our attention toward the sodajerk behind the counter who had, in listening to us, diverted his attention from the grill he was manning and had somehow started a grease fire. The jock went into action, jumping over the counter and taking a towel, began beating the flames on the stove with it.

Sooner or later we all need to face the fact that opportunity comes but once in a lifetime, and I took it. I grabbed Barb's hand and headed outside, dragging her unwillingly toward the sidewalk.

"Let me go, you moron! That's my brother in there!"

"Your brother?" I asked, incredulously.

She quit trying to pull away and smiled a smile as wicked as my wink earlier. "Yes. What did you think?"

"Nevermind what I thought. Do you want to go out Friday night?" I asked, getting down to business.

"With the most notorious bad boy in town? Why should I? And why would you want to go out with me? I hear you don't like nice Jewish girls."

Nailed.

"Well, maybe I changed my mind." I said shortly, embarassed for the first time in my life about my reputation.

"Maybe I haven't." she said, her mouth twitching.

"Maybe I could pursuade you?" I asked, and gave her my best smile. I knew then that she would be my girl.

"Maybe I'll be at my daddy's work Friday night." she countered.

"Maybe I'll come and pick you up at seven." I reached out for her hand and brought it to my lips, kissing her knuckles softly.

"Maybe I'll be ready." she said, slightly breathless. Bingo.

"Maybe you could put in a good word for me with your pop?" I asked hopefully, raising one eyebrow.

"Maybe I will, maybe I won't. Why should I?" Our eyes met then, and the games for me ended there and then.

"You can't find a reason?" I said softly.

"Well...maybe. After all, you think all these years I hung out behind the counter because I liked the smell of grease?"

Stop stop, that is a dangerous place to stand,my friend,i yelled to to the sillouette of a person in the mist of the fullmoon night, on the forward starboard deck,of this luxury liner on a journey of the seven seas, crashing in an unpredictable surging storm. After a silent pause i heard "okay my friend who was the wise guy?",i replied i dont know what your talking about, suddenly we heard a VERY loud roar! as a rogue wave hit the port side and crashed over the bow dwarfing the ship momentarily ,i then yelled again to the figure,"sooner or later we all need to face the fact that this is not a good place to be right now",then there was a temporary thinning of the mist and i noticed the figure hanging on to the handrail on the outer side of the ship almost in a frozen like manner, you know, unable to let go like,so,feeling for the safety of this person i made my way slowly up to him sliding my hands along the hand rail with a tight grip so as not to be swept off my feet, dealing with the ocean crashing constantly into my face and the ship listing in unpredictable manner from the giant greenhouse generated waves crashing, crashing all about,i eventally made it nearer to the person and as i got closer his eyes lit up as he saw who was walking towards him," oh at last, some one","c'mon" i said, take my hand, i'll help you","i can't" he replied,"why i said"," some wise guy put super glue on the rail and i'm stuck fast,"at that moment two giant waves hit the bow of the ship simultaneously bringing it to an almost vertical position, then as the ship crashed semingly nonstop deep into the turbulent unforgiving ocean the force was enough to break his hands free from the rail leaving some layers of skin behind, causing him to scream in pain, his screams were over shadowed by the roaring storm and was hardly noticeable,as this happened i was able to get a grip on him and make it to the saftey of interior of the ship.Suddenly in the lit up passageway to my amazement i saw who i had save from almost certain peril,"george bush" i said in my amazement,"this journey i am on has been filled with suprises, but you take the cake mate,we exchanged pleasentries and made our way to the bar for well earned bourbon,or two, long into the night.

This journey I am on has been filled with surprises. Sure I have lived a sheltered life, but we have had some exciting moments. Since Jane Austin says to write about what you know let me share one with you. . .
Growing up as the YPK (Youth Pastor's Kid) at church sure has its advantages - its disadvantages too, but that has nothing to do with this story. One advantage was that we were always early enough for church to raid the fridge and hang out with Carl, the 'groundskeeper/repairman/jack of all trades guy. He is always there early to set the thermostats in order to freeze everyone into knowing how to save money on the energy bill, and also to change the lightbulbs. Well this specific sunday morning my sister, Lauren, and I were hanging out with Carl, and the church secretary Linda. We, being little kids, were probably causing more distraction than helping get ready for the service, but I don't think that they really cared- people generally thought we were cute, and entertaining. When the assistent Pastor came in, Pastor Mike, we all said a hello, good morning, then he went to his office and we went back to conversing among ourselves.
Suddenly we heard a VERY loud roar! And watched Pastor Mike as he was running frantically toward us screaming like a little girl- we got a big kick out of this, Pastor Mike being a body-builder and a pretty big guy. "Carl, there is a BAT in my office" He squealed as he shut the office door and rested against it. Carl was laughing in his 'this would be an excellent time to pull a practical joke' kind of way. "Okay.......... Who was the wise guy who let that bat in my office? It was closed last night." Mike said after regaining his composure.
"That is a dangerous place to stand, my friend, bats can squeeze right under doorways, and I am pretty sure that is how he got into your office." Carl said, still chuckling a little bit about the terrified look that was on Pastor Mike's face when he was running to the office.
"Sooner or later we all need to face the fact that church is going to start and we are going to have a bat swooping around the sanctuary!" Linda put in.
Carl, with two little girls following his every move, went to go and capture the bat. No, that wasn't very smart of us, but we had never seen a bat before and were very curious. Mike wasn't going to move unless he could make a clean run out the door to safety, so he stayed where he was until he heard the bat chasers going to the back of the church, and consequently away from his proximity. Then he dashed out the front door faster than Linda could have ever expected- as we weren't there to see the dash I will just have to believe her word.
Well the bat quest was over soon enough and Pastor Mike's eyes lit up as he saw who was walking toward him. It was Carl and two little girls with a bat in a bucket. He wasn't going to take any more chances and so he ran to his car until the bat had swooped off and was miles away, and then some.
I will never forget that sunday morning, and I haven't looked at Pastor Mike the same since.

Travelling with a group of college buddies can be extremely fun and very taxing as well. So far, this journey I am on has been filled with surprises. Johnnie and Bill managed to slip ahead of us in the darkness of the park as we were returning to our hostel after a long day of sightseeing. Johnnie was the mastermind and took Bill along to witness "his genius" in pulling yet another practical joke.
He scanned each and every person coming down the path and then his eyes lit up as he saw who was walking toward him. It was myself and Dr. Thompson, our professor and guide who had planned the trip for his most ardent history students. Bill had moved slightly from the shadows toward the the rendavous point with the unsuspecting students and Johnnie whispered, "That is a dangerous place to stand, my friend." "Do you want to be caught in the line of fire?" Bill knowing what lie in wait knew he didn't want any part of it and quickly moved back out of sight and out of the way.
Earlier Johnnie has told some of the group about the escape of a giant Kodiak bear from the local zoo and that the authorities believed it may take refuge in the dark, wooded park. Of course it began to circulate among the students but Dr. Thompson assured us there was nothing to fear. However, our mind's eye began to see danger lurking arround every curve and each passing minute in the darkness seemed like hours while our fear grew with every step taken.
Suddenly we heard a VERY loud roar! This was followed by something reaching out and "clawing" us. There were shrieks and screams that pierced the night and their were shouts saying, "It's the bear. Run, run for your lives!" Bodies were flying out in all directions trying to flee the killer bear that was sure to get us all. I had frozen when I felt the claws and as "my life passed before my eyes" I heard the sounds of two distinct and deep belly laughs coming out from behind the trees next to us.
I looked down and realized that the "razor sharp claws" of the Kodiak were really just some branches off the tree and that Johniie and Bill were scratching them across our bodies while Johnnie let out the blood curdling roar of the bear.
The screams had caught the attention of the local constable who came running and called for back up. Once the constable discovered the hoax we were all hauled into the local precinct and were heading for a jail cell. It took hours and the deft diplomacy of Dr. Thompson to keep us from being deported and after much cajoling, allowed to return to the hostel just as the new day was dawning. With our heads hung low from exaustion and the realization that our trip was nearly ruined we were ready to leave Johnnie in that jail. The good Dr. Thompson while livid with Johnnies' antics did keep him from the cells but the joke would be on Johnnie.
He had been forced to pay a heavy civil fine and it left him completely broke for the remaing week of our trip. Dr. Thompson loaned him enough money to eat on but he missed all of the tours and night life for the rest of the journey. Sooner or later we all need to face the fact that our actions have consequences and that the price for such consequences can be very steep indeed. A lesson we learned the hard way.
