Standby mode is used to conserve energy. When the computer is placed in this mode it switches to a low-power state. All files and applications that you had open remain open but certain devices, including the monitor and hard disks, turn off. Everything that is in the computer’s memory stays there. It is not saved to the hard drive. This mode is ideal when you are taking a short break but it is not the ideal solution when you will be away from your computer for longer periods of time more than 10 minuet.
Hibernate mode takes everything in your computer’s memory and writes it to a file on the hard drive. The computer is then almost shut down completely (only the fan is running). You will notice that it takes longer for your computer to go into and come out of hibernate mode than stand-by. Ideally, if you do not want to shut down your computer, hibernate mode is the better choice when you will be away from your computer for extended periods of time than standby mode (15-30 minuet)
More than that you better turn off your computer
I not recommend to use the standby mode or hibernate, because sometimes both mode It make PC crash and get slower.

Stand by will not work if u go to close ur computer.it can only save power.ur comp. will continue running and needs power supply
Hibernate is used to partially close the computer. ur conputer rund inspite of no power supply.
turn off will completely close the computer.According to me it is the best option to save the computer from crashes.Hibernate may help u start the computer the fastest but it is more liable to crash and stand by can cause problems if ur computer faces power fluctuations. so turn off is the best and the most safe way for a computer

If you are not using your computer all the time, you are not getting your money's worth!
My computers run 24 hours a day, they are searching for a cure for Tuberous Sclerosis.

If you don't care about Tuberous Sclerosis, there are lots of other useful or interesting things your computer can work on:
