Rainbows, the seven visible colours of the spectrum. In this country we may see it as beautiful, but in some countries they see a rainbow as a curse or something. Hear it means the rain is stopping. After all the rainbow is just an optical illusion with light being refracted by water droplets, it can make some people smile and on a berometer it will read change.

Rainbows are beautiful for the same reason stars and the moon is. They are all untouchable, unattainable. No matter how far or fast you run, or how you reach, you will never reach a rainbow.

The lore behind rainbows, adds a bit to their presence, it makes people (or at least kids) want to find the end of the rainbow and have for them selves a nice pot of gold, and perhaps a visit with one of the little people (Leprechaun).

Because we instinctively understand it's impermanence, and thus are able to see it truly as it exists without fear of loosing it. Ususally we see things in a wrong way, instinctively reifying them as permanent (because we wish them to last eternally), which means we are disturbed by fears of loosing them - analyze how you feel about your family, friends, health, property, job, old photos and other memories, inheritance, reputation, and so on, and maybe you will understand what I mean. Even if we intellectually know they are all impermanent, we still have the instinctive feeling they are (and should be) permanent, and that our happiness is dependent on them.

If we are able to see everything as naturally impermanent as the rainbow, we will also be able to see the natural beauty in everything and in everyone, just like many of us see in the rainbow.

I believe it has to do with a combination of shape, the fact that it covers the entire color spectrum, and the common cultural belief that it represents hope for a better tomorrow. But there is definitely a visceral reaction when you first get a glimpse of one that isn't explained by culture. Would be an interesting thing to do a psychological study on!

It is the simplicity that makes it so beautiful. The smile it puts on a child's face, the sun after the rain, the colour on a gloomy day.

It is beautiful because it is!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I'm sure there are some individuals out there that don't like them... Personally I think because they are made by a simple act of nature.

The question was yours and answer must be yours too, in this case.

It is beautiful, because I saw it, and was overwhelmed by a mix of colors. A natural formation, very big, so on and so forth.
