I have AVG installed on my laptop and after scanning, has informed me that a virus is found in win32/bacalid in path c:\windows\system\mapisrvr.exe. Is this a virus file or is it required by Windows? If it is required, should I heal it and restore to original location?

Start with an online scan from Bitdefender.com.

There are several intermediate steps you should try. If they all fail, the final answer is to run HijackThis. Post the HijackThis log to a forum like GeeksToGo. You might need to remove some registry keys.

Here's an answer I previously posted to a similar problem.

Good luck,

The bacalid is a polymorphic virus that infect .exe files. The mapiserver should be a file needed by microsoft exchange, which i don't know if it's installed on your machine.

My advice is to make a copy of that file ( mapiserver) and then run the bacalid "stinger" a small utility that remove the bacalid.

have a good read at the link below!

Bacalid.A is a polymorphic virus that infects .EXE and .DLL files. It uses some stealth mechanisms and obfuscation techniques to hide itself, therefore preventing easy detection
