The VA is a great place to start. Go to a Veterans Advocate for the state that you are in first. He/she will do all the paperwork for you. Bring your DD 214 and if you have, a copy of ALL your military medical records. They'll do the rest. This is how I did it. I'm a Vet on disability still working for the Government so I kinda got a good feel about it. Other places, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars. They have very informative websites-especially the VA. Also, and very important. Go to a personal doctor to varify your disability. Its important! Heaven forbid that you are misdiagnosed and a letter from them will bolster your claim.

People who have been in the military have their own set of benefits which are far more lucrative than people without military careers have. Consult with the military benefits folks before you go on disability - sometime working an extra two months makes a big difference in what you will receive - so time it right.

The benefits people get who do not pay into the system are for people who acquired their disability before the age of 22 or became totally and permanently disabled sometime later. Their disability has to be severe enough that any kind of work is impossible and ability to be fully independent without support is also not possible. If you are still working -SSI is not for you.

SSDI is not free welfare. People pay into it as insurance with every paycheck.

TANF is only for families with children.

You will be eligible for food stamps most likely.

Hundreds contact your local VA adm.
Then the American Legion or VFW where you live
Pay a visit to you local congressman.
My fater was retired Navy and even got a free head stone when he passed. It is a beautiful marker.
I hope you will not need that for a long time, however.
