I know there is a site to do that. But I forget what is it.

I remember that the homepage link must be "index_.htm", for some reason.

Free domains are not really possible since it costs money to register a domain. If you are willing to pay a nominal fee then http://www.godaddy.com would be your best option.

There are a couple of alternatives though, if you don't mind advertisement on your site Microsoft Office Live Basics offers a free domain http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officelive/FX101534261033.aspx The only catch is that it will include their logo and link to their service on your site. They are hoping to snag a large share of the market by offering a free domain, hosting and 500MB of storage. It will require a credit card to verify your age.

You can also visit http://www.dot.tk/ and register a free domain but it will end in .tk rather than .com.

You could also try a free Web hosting site like http://www.freewebs.com and then use http://www.freedomain.co.nr/ to get a free sub domain. It will redirect the URL to your site without a long difficult Web address.

Don't be hoodwinked.
It is a come-on, There is really nothing free.
If there is a site offering a free Domain Name they are making it back in either Hosting, or One time publishing or Software.
Trust me when I tell you you will be money ahead just going to Yahoo's Geocities and get everything at one place and they are very very good.
