A very good driver in a very good car, you have to say that because he's beating Alonso who is 2 times world champion and is sat in the same car.
It's not a great car because it is not a million miles away from the Fezza, in fact it might turn out to be a slightly inferior one by the end of the season.
As for Hamilton the driver, it takes many many years of success, fantastic memorable drives, mindblowing wins, world championships, etc before your considered a 'great' driver.

Put it this way- an average driver in a great car wouldn't be able to beat a two-time world champion in the same car from the same team solely because of the car.
Lewis is a good driver in a great car. There's no way an average driver in a great car can do so well. The best the driver can do is to get lots of points but Lewis has done overtaking moves on other drivers, which requires the driver's own effort and not just relying on the car.

He's a great driver in a good car. :)
Really.
This McLaren is not great, not like, say, the McLaren MP4/4 of 1988 that won 15 of 16 races. And not like the 2004 Ferrari F2004 that won 15 of 18 races.
Hamilton has, as I mentioned in the question about could Raikkonen have had a brilliant rookie year like this in a top car, has nearly 100 formula races under his belt before F1. He won championships all the way up. He is no surprise and he is a top talent.
In my opinion, in fact, relative to motorsport, all F1 drivers are great. Within the cadre of F1 drivers, Hamilton is a standout already. I agree he might not be winning races if he were in any other car (save for the Ferrari), but he would be getting the most from it. That you can be sure of.

He pushes at 100% every lap, he is aggressive off the start and at overtaking, he is professional and good with the media, he is the fittest driver on the grid.
And, he is leading the current world champion in the same car - in his rookie year!
He is too young to say for sure wether he will be another Schumacher or another Montoya.... but if he takes this years world championship then I believe he will go on to win many more.
Potentially great driver in the 2nd fastest car (Ferrari have the edge in race trim)

It's not only the car. The Shoe maker won many races in his Ferrari, which was not the fastest formula one car of the time. It looks like Lewis is a very good driver. He's also a very good representative for this country, in many ways.

Its way too early yet to start calling him "great"..you can start doing that after he's won his third world championship maybe. He's still got to win his first one yet.
But he's obviously talented. The fact that the current McLaren is a very good car certainly helps more than a little..he wouldn't be challenging if he was stuck in a Sauber at the back of the grid, would he?
Although Ferrari seem to have got their act together and McLaren isn't looking quite so dominant now.

Couldn't call him a great driver yet.But he did well before stepping up to F1.Other drivers have had good cars but did nothing.Cars today are more or less even and he beats the world champion in the same car.Not yet a great driver but on the
verge.

He is a great driver in a great car. He proved his driving abilities in the GP2 series last year. Now he catches a ride in the McLaren which has turned into the best car this season. So everything has just come together perfect for him.
