How being declered a suspect means anything more than being declared a suspect ?
Does it mean you have been charged, No
Does it mean you have been found Guilty, No
Having read some of the wildly speculative and frenzied accusations on here I think some people think it does.
Like I have all ways said, Innocent untill proven Guilty, I think you will find that is how it works, well in the real world it does, clearly not for a lot of people in the world of Yahoo Q&A.

Yes, you are right. I hope they get some answers though, so this can be sorted out once and for all.
But I'm afraid I don't have much confidence in anything anymore. They were very quick to name Robert Murat as a suspect (and he DID have a lawyer) and I can't help but feel that they are clutching at straws. Well, we shall see.
They used forensic evidence to find Lindy Chamberlain guilty, and Sian Jenkins. Both were released from prisons and their convictions overturned.
People go through hell and back in these situations and I do think the McCanns have done so, too.

Just a suspect - but why do you express surprise at the speculation?

The Portugese police have said from the begining that the McCanns statemtns and those of their friends have glaring inconsistencies. That if these statements were true it would have been impossible for Madeleine to have been taken.

Their statements put someone near the children at such regular short intervals yet other witnesses say no one left the table for about an hour!

After the statements their emails and telephone conversations with their party raise serious questions.

There is bound to be speculation when the police have been forced to declare her a suspect in order to force her to answer 22 questions!!!

Innocent until proved guilty yes - but if it turns out that she does get charged and found guilty - where does that put your stance?

Sad fact is that many child murders have had the parents on TV pleading for information and the child's return only for a parent to be convicted of the murder. Statistics show that in the main most child murders are committed by parents.

The portugese appear to be suggesting a tragic accident and a cover up but again that has to be conjecture.

All anyone can do is wait and see.

But I really fear for the world when questions like yours come up. What about free speech - would you really ban that? What next - burning books? This question says more about you than it does about the people you are criticising.

I am going by the basis that NO they haven't been charged but the Police SUSPECT them of having something or have some form of evidence that they are part of Maddies disappearance.

But i cant remember anyone on here stating all you have said when Robert Murat was classed as a suspect but not charged or found guilty! A lot of people were then happy to comment he was guilty and use him as a scape goat etc.....

Now that Kate McCann is going to be a suspect only goes to show in my opinion that there is a lot more to this case. From day one, many of us were shot down in flames for even suggesting that the parents could know more then they would like us to believe.

I have never once said that I believe them to be guilty of murder. My opinion has never changed regarding this case in fact the longer it has gone on as only confirmed to me that things are amiss. Most ‘anti’s’ are not gloating or rubbing their hands like someone suggested but it does just confirm their beliefs in what they felt wasn't’t right about this case. Extremists on both sides Saturn lets not start the stupid war again over some idiot users who like it all kicking off.

Being declared El guido(suspect) gives the Police & the McCanns certain Rights.i.e.the right to remain silent in kate's case. As for the police the right to ask probing questions and other right's of which i'm unsure.

being made a suspect means she is suspected of doing something and has been given the right to remain silent.

if she does remain silent we know she is guilty because why would she want to do anything to hinder the case which decides whether this unworthy parent sees her child again before she is taken away from these idiots to a place where people actually care enough about her to keep her close by instead of leaving her in a hotle room because she is a nuisance to them.

I agree, however, the same reasoning didn't seem to stop SOME Pro-McCanner's rubbing their hands with glee when Murat was in the same position.

Even the most vehement "McFan" has to admit that this development does seem to point towards the McCann's knowing more than they have let on though, surely?

And while we are on the topic, can any "Pro" person explain to me why Gerry, Kate and the Tapas 9 lied and contradicted each other so often? I'm not trying to stir things up any more than they already are, it's just that the lies and contradictions have always made the McCann's LOOK more suspicious, so why do it? I have my opinion, but I would like to hear any other theories.

I agree to a degree, we shouldn't jump the gun, but I am assuming that they must have pretty good evidence to be declaring this now. It does come straight after DNA results from the apartment afterall. However, Murat was a suspect and look what happened there? Yes "Innocent until proven guilty", but also I believe in "no smoke without fire".

The fact that people are making such a fuss about the 'arguido' status thing is because they know and understand NOTHING about the Portugese law and how the Portugese police have to operate within that law.

Kate has been declared a suspect within days of the DNA results coming in, which suggests that they seem to have real physical evidence against her. Yes she is innocent until proven guilty, but you can't deny that it looks incredibly suspicious. Both Kate and Gerry are being interviewed today, so maybe things will become clearer after that.
