when its a nice easy percentage like 20% for the meal, easiest way is divide bill by 10 and multiply that by 2, that gives you 20%, as for the 70% divide by 10 again and multiply by 7

dividing by 10 gives you 10%

for example

bill $45.99 divide by 10= $4.59
multiply by 2 = $9.18

then add them together $45.99+$9.18=$55.17

in this case leave $55, you round it up or down a bit to the easiest amount, in the case of a tip you dont need to be precise, in math you obviously need to be exact

The easiest way to do this type of math is to divide the the first number by 10. For example: 45.99 divided by 10 is 4.599. Now since you would like to know what 20% is, you now multiply 4.599 (which is 10 percent) by 2, i.e. 4.599 x 2 and your answer is 9.198.

Here is how it looks on paper:

45.99 / 10 = 4.599 (10 percent)
4.599 x 2 = 9.198 (20 percent)

I would round the numbers to make it easier to compute.

46 / 10 = 4.60 (10%)
4.60 x 2 = 9.20

Don't forget to put the $ sign back $9.20.

As to the 2nd problem. You begin the same way as your question about how to determine 20%.

$19.99 / 10 = $1.999 (which we will round to $2)

Now you have two choices. You can compute
$2 x 7 = $14

which is your discount (70%) and then subtract that amount from $19.99 or you can determine the answer by determining what is 30% (100% - 70%) of $19.99 (which is your final price).

Here is the math:

$19.99 / 10 = 1.999 ($2)
$2 x 3 = $6

(this is the price you will pay after the 70% discount)

or

$19.99 / 10 = 1.999 ($2)
$2 * 7 = $14 (this is the 70% discount)
$19.99 - $14 = $5.99 (or $6)

20% is the same as 20 / 100 or 0.2

therefore: 20% of 45.99 is (45.99 x 0.2) = 9. 198
So, you would leave $9.20 as the tip
Similarly, 20% x 5 = 100%
therefore, 9.198 x 5 should = 45.99, which it does.

If a meal costs $19.99 and you get 70% off:
the whole price - 70%
therefore, it is 19.99 - (19.99x 0.7) = 19.99 - 13.993
= 5.997
So, you only pay $6 (if you round it off - money can only be represented to 2 decimal places)

1) What is the total amount for a check of $45.99 plus a 20% tip?

1.2 * $45.99 = $55.19

2) If a meal normally costs $19.99, how much does it cost when it's 70% off?

(1 - .70) * $19.99 = .3 * $19.99 = $6.00

Just round it off to $46 and take 10% of that,which is easy to do in your head, which would be $4.60, and then x 2=$9.20. Even if you are off a few cents, you know it is at least $9.00, and just leave that.

If you are getting 70% off something, just round that $19.99 off to $20.00, and you know that you are only paying 30%, so 3X2=$6.00, so 70% of $20, would be $6.00....you can do this in your head, but just remember that it has to make sense, and like the 70% off, or 50% off, which is 1/2 of the amount, just take the amount that you would be paying,and work with that number. 60% off would be 40% of what you would be paying, so $20.00 less 40%= $8.00 (2x4)=8

2o% is 1/5,so you divide 45.99 by 5 =$9.20 just remember a percent is like a penny (1/100th)of a dollar,so 70% off is 70 cents per dollar. you pay 30 cents/$ ,answer $6.00 30 x 20

check = 45.99
20% tip = 20% of 45.99 = 9.18

to pay = 45.99+9.18 or 55.17

meal = 19.99

off = 70%
so to pay 30% = 19.99*30% or around $6

Round it up to $46.
10% would be $4.60
Take that times 2 to get 20% which is $9.20

Again, I'd round up to $20
10% of that would be $2
Take that times 3 to get 30% (which is what you pay if it's 70% off) and you get $6.00

Hope that helps!
