I was a union rep years ago for a large company. One day I was called in to rep a person that had called in. Knowing this person and, his record for calling in sick all the time, I was figuiring on quite an argument to save this mans job.

The supervisor pulled out his record: to say the least, we all ended up laughing at some of his reasons for calling in of which were:
car wouldn't start.
didn't have enough gas to get in
the weather was bad and afrid of accident
low tire on car
battery dead
overslept
had stomach ache
had the flu
had a cold
Bat in house
wife ill
kids ill
car pool forgot me
tired and couldn't keep awake to drive in.
car making funny noises
water shut off
no heat in house (winter)
The list run on and on to 34 call ins in 90 days. The man had never in the last year got a full paycheck. The last year he called in so many times, he made 16 thousand dollars while the other men made in excess of twenty thousand dollars.

He was warned and told his job was at stake, he promised to make his attendence better. The next week he called in with the flu, the deer season had just started.

Once my washing machine broke and everywhere was filled with water since no one else at home I had to clean the mess. And I was late ofcourse. I think this may be a good excuse if you live alone.

-Had to take my sick aunt to the hospital before coming into work (sympathy... make sure you let a co worker know before pitching late to back you up)

-Got a flat tire (careful of this one! It tends to become reality the next day lol)

-Felt a bit sick but self medicated and came in anyway ( shows determination and might score you a half day and a good review at a staff meeting)

Make sure the excuses arent half a-s-s-e-d so that you appear to be a hero who can juggle life and work lol.

There is no excuse . You should be on time . Now if you really had a flat tire or ect that's different . But being to work on time shows maturity and respect.

lol @ cowboy doc above me... hmmm @ best excuse... dog got hit by a car... I have seen this actually happen w/ a neighbor, lol... now, me, if my dog got hit by a car, I would go into work ontime anyway... it's just a freakin' dog... argh! but, then again, I would not have a dog, lol... another would be... "my dog hid the keys" lol! I have actually had to search for my keys before because one of the children hid them, lol... but, I was not headed to work on that particular day...

in your case i guess you would just have to tell them the truth...that you were cleaning your guns and time just got away a bit and you absolutely could not leave them unfinished.

or, maybe you were feeling a bit too dangerous to go into the public?....
