In about 5 or 6 billion years, the Sun will have fused most of it's hydrogen into helium, and many of the 'heavier element' reactions will be going on at its core. As it continues to use up it's fuel, the center of the star will slowely begin to collapse under its own weight. The resultant shock wave will blow the outer layers of the solar atmosphere away, and the Sun will enter a red giant pgase, expanding intil its surface is well past the orbit of the Earth. Then it will continue to slowly cool until it becomes a white dwarf and finally burns out.

Some say that it will have natural lifespan of 10 billion years, and having lived for4-5 billion years, it will be on the main sequence for 5-6 billion year.
But I think human will discover the star mining technique before 2 billion years. I don't know how this will affect the sun longevity, but some says that it might either decrease or increase the longevity.
