I think that #21 should be retired for Paul O'Neill. If Alex Rodriguez can play for the Yankees for four more years, and keep producing like this, then the Yankees should retire #13 for him. Eventually, #2 will be retired for Jeter, and #6 will be retired for Torre. #51 should also be retired for Bernie Williams. #42 will eventually be retired for Mariano Rivera. I also believe that #46 will be retired for Andy Pettitte. #20 should also be retired for Jorge Posada. If it would have been up to Roger Clemens that he could go into the Hall of Fame as a Yankee, I believe the Yankees would have likely retired #22 for him. However, since he will be forced to wear a Red Sox cap upon entry to the Hall, then his number won't be retired for the Yankees.

I think that in order to have your number retired you should be more than just a great player. Not retiring Mariano Rivera's number immediatly upon him retiring would be a huge mistake. In this day in age of hired guns going to the highest bidder Rivera's loyalty is refreshing. Not to mention that as a Sox fan he is the last person I want to climb onto the mound at any point. I don't like him because he's a Yankee, but I have to tip my hat to his skill and the fact that he hasn't jumped on the free agent train in the past few years even though he easily could have.

The more you do anything, the more it cheapens the honor. However, there's little doubt they will retire Jeter's # 2 and Torre's # 6. Once that happens the lowest number available on the Yankees will be # 11.

Not for a while, yet, but:
#2 Torre
#6 Jeter
#42 Rivera (it will be have to be "retired" for the second time)
And depending on how things turn out
#13 Alex Rodriguez
As much as I loved Paul O'Neil and Don Mattingly, and Bernie Williams, they have not been elected to the MLB Hall of Fame so I don't think they are deserving of getting their numbers retired. It hurts to say that, but the Yanks get so many great players on championship teams that they'd run out of players if they didn't set a high bar.
Plus these players don't crack the starting line-up on the all-time great Yankees team.

Information Police-How can you say not Mattingly? Many teams have retired numbers of non HOFers. Mattingly was the captain of the Yanks, and an Icon in NY. To not retire his numbers would be a huge mistake. I'm glad to say I was there the day they did retire his number.

Mattingly absolutely deserves his number retired. He WAS the Yankees from 1985 - 1995. One of the best defensive 1st baseman in history and if it wasn't for his back he would be in the hall of fame.
