A sometime ignorant man who thus made mistakes. I don't know the case, I guess from the fact that he could be considered both there is good and bad - I guess it is what he did to the native Americans.

He is a hero.
I created a long answer from personal opinion and education, then researched Wikipedia and it altered my preconceptions... except for this: Like you and me, CC tries to make the best of and improve upon his life through serving others who can help him do this. He revels in his successes, to get them he must learn from many mistakes and (this is what defines a hero--) he must resolutely face his fears and persistently walk right through them to achieve his goals. I want to be a hero, too.
I found this enlightening and moving to read:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Columbus
This was my original unresearched answer:
neither. He is an ordinary man in an extraordinarily fortunate and priviledged position. He has access to and financing from the Spanish Monarchy. He commands three ships and all aboard. He represents the Spanish Monarchy wherever he goes. He is extremely ambitious, intrepid and will get great favor from the Spanish Monarchy plus a big cut of the riches he finds if he is successful, not to mention all the related social benefits including entering Western history forever. He probably did a lot of or bad to or influenced other villains to harm some folks, like indigenous peoples of America. But he also benefitted the Spanish Monarchy, and probably at least any colonists he brought from Europe. He took incredibly huge risks for himself and all the people under his care to get whatever he got. He did not find India, but by accident, he found a place that turned out to be just about as valuable. It would have been found sooner or later by someone else were it not Columbus. At heart, he was like you and me, trying to improve his life starting with what he has now, learning from mistakes and reveling in successes.
What occured, what he accomplished or caused others to do does not make a hero. American Heritage online dictionary: The hero is someone who resolutely faces and walks through fear to achieve his ends. He did that. It might be why I live in Texas. It might have resulted in my birth! If the answer must be simple, I say "hero." I want to be one, too.

Mmm, not sure that accidentally stumbling upon America and slaughtering the natives can be considered heroic.
Although, I do believe that ALL sailors / discoverers of other worlds are very very brave.

He was both. He was a brave, daring man that discovered the new world for my anscestors, the Europeans. He was also brutally indifferent to Native people and treated them as if they were subhuman.

Villain - without doubt. Guilty of genocide, rape and pillage. And he didn't find anything - it wasn't lost.
