Alternate names; eyelid twitches, Blepharospasms.
The most common causes of eyelid spasms:
1) too much caffeine such as coffee, tea, and even soda.
2) stress
3) lack of sleep or fatigue
4) eye strain such as close computer work
5) medication side effects
6) eye iritation
7) eye dryness
8) allergies
9) dust or hair stucked in the conjunctiva
Once spasms begin, they may continue off and on for a few days. Then, they disappear. Most people experience this type of eyelid twitch on occasion and find it very annoying. In most cases, you won't even notice when the twitch has stopped
More severe contractions, where the eyelid completely closes, are possible. These can be caused by irritation of the surface of the eye (cornea) or the membranes lining the eyelids (conjunctiva).
Sometimes, the reason your eyelid is twitching cannot be identified. This form of eyelid twitching lasts much longer, is often very uncomfortable, and can also cause your eyelids to close completely.

The causes of a twitching eyelid vary, and aren't really known.
I've had them a few times, and looking back, the eyelid spasms seemed to be caused either by caffeine, or by a weak cold virus (In that case, the pulsating eyelid effect appeared a week before any other cold symptoms).
In all of my cases, the symptoms passed and my eyelids returned to normal after about 2-3 weeks.

It happens to me as well, I think it's mostly due to times of stress or lack of sleep.
