Poe is the father of many things, but not the short story. Washington Irving's "The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon" is a series of short stories (the two most familar being "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow) published before Poe published his first book of poetry. The stories in "The Sketch Book" were serialized in 1819-1820 and published as a book in 1820 where as Poe's "Tamerlane and Other Poems" came out in 1827 (although his work "Poetry" was started in 1824 but not printed until after his death). Chaucer's 14th century "Canterbury Tales," itself a series of stories collected in one book, poredates even Irving's works.
As for my favorite Poe short story, "The Tell-Tale Heart." Just love the way Poe uses the murderer's own heart beat as a way to get him to confess. And how that heart beat slowly makes the tale faster and more frantic as it reaches it's final climax.

I'm a fan of Fall of the house of Usher. If you want to read another author like that check out H P Lovecraft. He writes in sort of the same style of Poe.

I don't think he is even the father of the American short story as Washington Irving was writing them 20 years before him. He is called the father of detective stories at times. I always liked the Fall of the House of Usher.

I love his poem "The Raven" as for short stories I would have to say "The Fall Of The House Of Usher" and to my great surprise it was recently used in a murder mystrery book that I was reading.

I'm not sure he really is the short story's dad...but anyway, The Masque of the Red Death is amazing (followed closely by TellTale Heart and indeed Amontillado).
