X-2=X+2/4 +5

Its been 4 years since highschool and college math is reminding me of how much I have forgotten. How would i work through this problem? I need the steps rather than the answer.

X - 2 = (X + 2) /4 + 5 presume bracket, else it can't be solved.
4 (X - 2) = X + 2 + 4(5)
4X - 8 = X + 2 + 20
4X - X = 8 + 2 + 20
3 X = 30
X = 30/3
X = 10 (answer)

Hmm, that's a tricky one.

Basically, if there's only one variable (x) just isolate it on one side. However, this problem is more tricky because that will result in the x's cancelling out.

The problem is saying, what is x equal to so that both sides are equal? And it says, x-2 is equal to x+22/4. Such a number does not exist - you cannot subtract two from a number and end up with the same result as adding some (positive) number to it!

You should recheck the question to make sure you copied it down right. If you did, I would so no solution. You end up with 0=4, which is invalid.

After looking at the above answers, if you did in fact mean (x+2)/4 instead of x+2/4 (order of operations, so very important to use parentheses), I'll clear it up because they gave two different answers.

x-2=(x+2)/4 + 5
x-7 = (x+2)/4
4x-28 = x + 2
3x = 30
x = 10

I'm guessing that you mean
x - 2 = (x + 2)/(4 + 5) So
x - 2 = (x + 2)/9
9*(x-2) = (x + 2)
9x - 18 = x + 2
8x - 18 = 2
8x = 2 + 18 = 20
x = 20/8 = 5/2 (or 2.5)

i am not sure but i think that's way to do this.
x-2=x+2/4+5
x-x=2/4+5+2(change x and 2's side that's why it change it's symbols)
1=2/4+5+2
2/4+7 (seven times by 4 and both denominator same)
2/4+28/4
30/4
7.5

i think there's error in your typing cuz it doesn't add up.

X-2=X+2/4 +5
x-x = 2+2/4+5
0 = 2+1/2+5
0=7 1/2

X+X=5+2/4+2
2X=7.5
X=3.75 or 3(3/4)

(X-2)=(X+2)/(4+5) --> (X-2)=(X+2)/(9) --> 9(X-2)=(X+2) --> 9X-18=X+2 --> 9X-X=2+18 --> 8X=20 --> X=20/8 --> X=5/4=1.25
