There are two options.

1) Convert to decimals first:
3.25 x 5.25

2) Break them down in simple fractions
Take the denominator and multiply it by the whole number, then add the numerator.
3 1/4 = (3 x 4) + 1 = 13/4
5 1/4 = (5 x 4) + 1 = 21/4

some calculators will let you enter complex fractions directly but the faster way is to do some of this in your head then enter it.

It is easy:

3 1/ 4 is 4 * 3 + 1 over 4 = 13/4
5 1/4 is 4 * 5 + 1 over 4 = 21/4

Now enter 13 divided by 4 plus 21 divided by 4 equals
and you should get 8.5 for an answer.

You must convert the fractions to decimal first.

1/4=0.25 so
3 1/4 * 5 1/4 would be 3.25 * 5.25

Some calculators have a fraction button, and you can enter 3 1/4 * 5 1/4 directly, but most don't and you have to convert to decimal first.
