I lived in Ventura, CA - not LA proper.
I would have to go with Boston.
LA doesn't really have the character. People in CA in general are apathetic, people on the east coast are more interesting. The weather in the south west is great, but if you've lived where there are four seasons you get bored with good weather after a couple of years. The holidays are just weird in south west. Lights on palm trees - please.
The advantage to the west coast is that every trend in the country starts there and works east. The produce is much better. In general people on the west coast are more health conscience and actually take care of themselves. Easy access to Hawaii, Mexico and Las Vegas.
Boston and New England have the best education system in the country. The people tend to be better educated and better informed than other parts of the country. People care. Politics and political ideals are huge. Sports (MLB, NFL, NBA) are much bigger in New England & New York than anywhere on the west coast. Believe it or not, the ocean water off Cape Cod is significantly warmer than Malibu. Better seafood. The top hospitals in the world are in Boston, there is no better place to be sick. Easy access to Europe, Florida and the Caribbean.
The best of both worlds is to live in LA from the day after Christmas until about mid April, then go back to Boston. The weather in Boston only really stinks for those 3.5 months.

wow, I would have to say Boston.
even though the weather can suck in Boston, you don't have to put up with the LA attitudes and that should be enough said. LA reminds me too much of New York. Boston and San Francisco should be sister cities. LA and NY should be sister cities
