The preferred shape, will be what do the intended use of the boat. I guess the Tunnel Hull for less drag. If a person use a boat in shallow water, a flat bottom or tri-hull. Rough water like the ocean, a v-hull. Sailboats you use a streamlined shape for racing, but, it pron to capsizing. This why we see people all sitting on one side of a racing sailboat. A cruiser is more stable to capsizing, but, they not very fast.
A motor boat I going to build next spring is designed for less wake, low horse power, but, with a 15-20 H.P. engine it should do 20 mph WOT (Wide Open Throttle). Going to try pulling a Skier on 2 skies.
In the Everglades people use the Air-boats (That what I call them). They shallow draft and can slide over small land areas of the swamps.

So, it really depend on what you want a boat to do as to the preferred shape and actually the propulsion.

You first have to ask - what am I going to use the boat for? If you haven't answered that question then none of the other questions such as the one you ask can be answered in context. Its like asking what is the best shape for a car? Well, do you want to haul kids? go fast? haul bricks? go off road? drag race? get it?
