Phones and computers have opened a wonderful tool for communication.

Many people use them to stay detached to 'stay in touch'.

It is not about the technology, it is about people excusing themselves because they believe that technology relieves them of personal responsibility.

Jen, it's both good and bad. I was born long before personal computers and wireless phones were invented. I've watched the global rule that you only called people after 8pm if it was a true emergency, disintegrate into calls everywhere, even important meetings, and the bathroom.

Yet, people who were very ill, "shut-ins," used to only be able to communicate with others when they visited, now can make or receive calls from their beds. The same is true of computers. A laptop may be an excellent communication device for people who live far away from cities, or others who can't get out much.

Some of us just "veg out" in front of the TV, but with a computer, you can pay bills, do email, even work a job from home, keeping you better connected to the world.

I started going to a local university in 1996. Few cell phones were available, much less seen in public. I had to take 2 years off, and returned in 1999. In '96 a gathering in front of the library would be students discussing group projects, assisting each other with homework, or just socializing together. By '99 when I saw numbers of students out in front of the library I was so surprised to discover none of the conversations being held was with anyone near by! They were all on phones. If that isn't a comment on depersonalization, nothing is!

Hello my dear friend

Anything to a limit is always a boon.
There is a proverb stating that :
even if its ur favourite dish it becomes a poison if its too much
Surely phones and computers are surely a boon unless used within a limit

Sometimes I dislike having phones because I just want to be alone sometimes and my job requires me to have a cell phone on me at all times but overall I think instant and mass communication have been a positive attribute of science.

the elder generation talked facing each other but they have to travel to see each other. this technology has given us option to communicate with distance. that made life easier but never less personal. WRITE AND TALK WITH TRUTH to people u are communicating with - that's still personal
