one particularly odd individual revealed in an answer yesterday that (s)he keeps books written by male authors in the other room.
I've never heard of such an organization scheme. I've heard of sorting alphabetically, or by genre, and even chronologically. But I never would have imagined that a feminist would banish male authors to a distant corner of the house. I mean, frankly, I'm floored, but now I wonder...
I've been wondering if this is a common feminist trait, or just the quirk of one certain self-loathing individual. Is Sarah McLachlan on the shelf at eye level while Seal is in a plastic milk crate in the basement, and are these placements based on gender?
Please explain - the more convoluted, the better.

OK, so self-loathing was a little excessive...

Absolutely--not only that, but I keep the lesbian writers away from the heterosexual women writers. Makes life easier that way. The ones who won't acknowledge their sexuality, well, I just leave them sitting on the edge of the shelf. Male writers--they're on the lowest shelves, of course...unless they're writing about women's issues (as if they have a clue!) in which case, they go one shelf up. The highest shelf is reserved for Anonymous, whom we all know is a woman. My biggest problem is figuring out where to put books that have been co-authored by men and women. Right now, they're in stacks as I haven't quite figured out an appropriate situation for them.
As for music, well, no good feminist would listen to anything other than women, so Sarah and Lilly and Kelly and Ani and the Dixie Chicks and all the rest have their place on what I call my Lilith tree--my CD holder for all the gals. Someone once tried to slip a Toby Keith in there, and was I ever mad!

Not a feminist, here...but rather, a wannabe organizationist. I have, for years, revered those who had their shelves and pantries and books and music all lined up - neatly - in organizational sense. And I have tried...believe me...to BE what I admire. But I guess some of us are just too lazy or not cut out to be what others might call 'anal' about the organization thing.
The gender separation thing is beyond my grasp or understanding...but I will admit to dividing music out by genre...at least for a while...before I get in one of those moods to sit around, drinking and playing songs from different cds...and then they're all jumbled again!

Not really answering the question, but offering an anecdote. During the Victorian era, on any given bookshelf, it was improper for books written by male and female authors to be touching one another, unless the two authors were married.

Um, no. I organize my books by subject area. And I don't have sizeable CD or DVD collections, so those I just don't organize at all.
I do keep books written by male authors in the other room. I also keep books by female authors in the other room.

I like to organize my books by spine depth and relevance to the feminist movement to date, so it might just happen that the male written books are in the basement next to my Micheal Bolton box set, but it is there fault for not interesting me enough to stay upstairs...

I separate my children's literature from my "other" books.
I separate my Christmas music from my "other" music.
I don't have enough DVDs for it to matter.
That's about as orgainzed as I get.
In my Troll-Shark-pleasing fantasy, I divide my feminist works into fiction and nonfiction, and place them in increasing order of misandry, then alphabetically by author first, title second. Happy now?

I organize alphabetically by the author's last name. So Ayn Rand will come right before Anne Rice. Kerouac comes before both of those women, and Shakespeare is right after the women. Virginia Wolff is way at the end.
CDs are also arranged alphabetically.
It's just easier that way.

LOL. There are many perversions in this world... At least she isn't hurting anyone... I have seen this sort of extreme behavior in some lesbian friends of mine. However, it has absolutely nothing to do with feminism. Most feminists are pretty rational human beings.

Nah, I don't really care, as long as books make it to the bookshelf, I'm happy. As with music, my hubby's collection of Linkin Park and Enimen takes over my collection of G'n'R a bit.

She sounds like an extremist who doen't like men. Personally, I have never heard of the practice. I like to organize my own books by topic and group them together if they are a set.
