It's one of my FAVORITE books (even though it took me 2 tries to get through it- origionally!). I've always thought that I was alittle like Sidney Carton...-a not too "savory" character, who knew how to get things "done", could never get the "girl", but was willing to do ANYTHING for her- in the end. Charles Dickens REALLY knew how to write a good story. I've read ALL of his works over the years... :)

While the plot was good and it depicted the historical era well I found it to be void of depth. It was very one demensional with little undertone. I guess I like books with layers. I'm really not a big Charles Dickens fan either. It took me two years to get through Oliver Twist and I thought the last third of the book was great but the parts leading up were awful. It just seemed very plain to me. I prefer Voltaires work as a comparative. His has emotion, texture, empathetic persuasion, and undertones.

I absolutely love Dickens and have tried to get into it loads of times but never managed to get beyond the first hundred pages or so. So do you recommend I try again?

p.s. Go see the musical or read the novel Les Miserables as you'll probably enjoy that too.

In high school (Class of 1996), I didn't have 2 read it, but my world history teacher showed a movie. It was kinda boring. Sure, there were beheadings, but I guess watching decapitations weren't important 2 the flim.
