I'm assuming that you have another way of getting online like Internet Explorer? Also, when you say you "click a link" you get "application not found," do you mean when you are trying to access Firefox itself? If both are correct, I would tell you to go to Start-->Control Panel (or click on Control Panel shortcut if it's on your desktop)-->Add or Remove Programs and see if you find Firefox. If you see Firefox, remove it (in case some pieces have been left behind on your system). Then I'd advise that you re-download Firefox from a place like cnet.com (http://www.download.com/Mozilla-Firefox/3000-2356_4-10719259.html?tag=lst-0-4 will do it). Reinstalling Firefox should make it workable as long as all the original is deleted from the system. BTW: I'm also assuming you have the right to add this to your system, and it was deleted accidentally? If it's your Mom's computer, you'd better get her okay to reinstall it...
I hope this helps.
Addition: On the Internet Explorer window, make sure the Menu Bar Toolbar is showing (with File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, Help). If it's not, right click at the top of the window and when you see a list of toolbars check Menu Bar toolbar (you should see File, etc. come up). Select Tools-->Internet Options-->Programs. Under the Programs tab, look toward the lower middle, you should see something that says Default web browser. Click the tab that says "make default" (which will make Internet Explorer your default web browser and you can also check the box that says "Tell me if Internet Explorer is not the default web browser" if you wish. That's how to make sure IE is the default web browser.

ok, here's the straight and narrow
in ie click on tools - internet options - programs tab - check box at bottom that says "internet explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser". close out ie, open it up, it should then ask you if you want to set it to the default. if not, reboot computer, if not after that go back and check to make sure check mark is still there. if not, uninstall any leftover files from firefox as mentioned above, and perhaps uninstall ie (it will reinstall itself automatically after a reboot)

Double-click the internet explorer icon. It will prompt to check whether IE is the default browser. Click yes; and bingo... IE is your default now.. To make Firefox default browser again, download a fresh copy from www.getfirefox.com, and re-install..
Cheers!

tell your mom that firefox is better show her the multi tabs and a few reviews you find online-- seriously it blows the crap out of internet explorer--
but your problem you need to change your default program settings
when a link is clicked it is looking for firefox since you must of choose firefox to b your default browser
change it back to IE
or download firefox again
