I've had the cable changed but the gas pedal still sticks and needs to be tapped to release it before each shift. I can'nt recreate this by pulling on the cable at the throttle control. My mechanic and I are stumpped. Any thoughts?

Probably the throttle shaft bushings of the carb or injector are worn and causing it to stick---common problem on some cars if it's not the cable itself....remove the cable at the carb or injector and manually move the throttle shaft to check for binding or sticking....if it sticks, you have to replace the bushings/throttle shaft or get a rebuilt carb. Use to have that problem on old Chevy Monza's and Vega's---wow, that's old. If it doesn't stick, then I would suspect the gas pedal itself or a bad cable. Sometimes a missing engine ground will short the ground path through the throttle cable and seize the cable slightly to the sheathing---make sure the engine is grounded well to the body. Also, some import cars have a dashpot on the carb to keep the throttle from slamming shut when you take your foot off the gas---could be sticking and causing the pedal to stick too maybe---just a thought.
