I've seen the movie many times and think it's a great movie, but never understood why they titled the movie, "The Color Purple." Anyone know why?

I believe that it is a metaphorical reference to rising to a calm place that you did not expect to happen when your journey began.

I love that movie too, mater of fact I just watched it for about the fifth time tonight......what a coincidence. I don't know, but maybe look up the meaning behind "purple". I did notice that the day that Celie met her sister and children again they were in a field with purple flowers and Celie wore a purple dress and they had purple cloths from Africa. Not sure what the actual significance of it is though.

That's one of my favorite old time movie too! I never really thought about but I did wonder about that at one point. So I'm not really sure why they titled it either. The only way I'm guessing is because the slave (plays by Whoopi Goldberg) was always get beaten and the bruises are purple. That's what I've always thought.

The fact that the writer is in awe of god and how amazing it is to come up with something like the color purple among the other amazing things that God can and does create

The title derives from a discussion between Celie and Shug about faith. Describing what God does to please people, Shug says, "I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it." After Celie asks what God does in response to this obliviousness, Shug replies that he creates something else people will see, because God just wants to be loved. The discussion leads the rekindling of Celie's faith, despite years of abuse and neglect.
