Rain hurts at speed.
A hat helps.

Besides some protection in a crash....

Wind noise at high speed is awful. After a long ride with no helmet your ears ring for hours. A helmet keeps the noise down.

With my full face helmet I can listen to my XM radio and Ipod. No chance without a helmet.

One hour of riding with just sunglasses and my eyes are RED and probably full of road grit and bugs. The visor on my full face helmet keeps me looking like I'm not stoned, and seeing well.

When it rains and you are riding without a helmet it is like a million pins and needles are hitting your forehead.

When it gets cold I would get frostbite on my face and ears without a helmet.

But it's my life and I should be the one to choose when I want to wear a helmet or seat belts or when to wipe my nose.

Also other than the obvious:

1. Wind is annoying at high speeds.

2. I really hate it when I'm not wearing a helmet and some truck kicks up a big rock which slams me in the middle of the forehead.

3. I'm not fond of bees and other insects decorating my face.

Despite various designs and requirements, helmets attempt to protect the user's head through a mechanical energy-absorption process. Therefore, their structure and protective capacity are altered in high-energy impacts. Beside their energy-absorption capability, their volume and weight are also important issues, since higher volume and weight increase the injury risk for the user's head and neck.

I used to play golf with a guy who was always 'one of the boys', cracking jokes (sometimes a bit 'off colour'), playing practical jokes, easy going sort of character, but never told us what he did..

One morning, he was running late, and apologised when he finally turned up:
"Sorry I was late guys, but I was called in early this morning to attend a cyclist who hit a telegraph pole. We took the top of his skull off, but his brain was just mush. He'll live, but he'll just be a vegetable. I don't know WHEN these young blokes will learn to wear helmets."

Turned out this guy was one of the countries leading brain surgeons; and he was talking about a BICYCLE rider.
'Nuff said.

It reduces the amount of grit that hits your face.

Get a full face helmet that fits, has a real DOT sticker, and a "Snell rating."
