If you're not sure, here's a few big ones:
70's
AC/DC
Cold Chisel
Rose Tattoo
Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs
The Angels
The Saints
Radio Birdman

80's
INXS
Midnight Oil
Crowded House
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Hunters and Collectors

90's & 00's
Silverchair
Powderfinger
You Am I
The Living End
Regurgitator
The Vines
Jet
The Butterfly Effect
Grinspoon
Wolfmother

Personally, I think we've got some of the best rock bands in the world, but I'm biased!

I love Aussie Rock and Punk mainly from the 80's and even made it to Sydney a couple of years ago and snagged quite a few of my "oldies" at Red Eye Records.

Some of my "lesser known" favs.

Beasts Of Bourbon
Dirty Three
The Dubrovniks
Exploding White Mice
Hoodoo Gurus
Lime Spiders
The Mad Turks (Of Istanbul)
Painters & Dockers
Plunderers
Sacred Cowboys
Screaming Tribesmen
The Triffids
Zimmermen

Plus I have a ton of Billy Thorpe stuff including the original "Children Of The Sun" (non-revisted) on CD (Australian release) and I have just about everything that Midnight oil & Hunters and Collectors ever released.

About the same as any major US metropolitan area.

Odd that other than an American 80s crazy for all things Aussie, there hasn't ever been a time period of the Aussie Sound (no it isn't Aussie music if you just add a didgeridoo, anymore than adding an accordion makes it Cleveland music). A lot of the bands, although great by themselves, seem to just be drawing on the trends of other places. I mean you never seem to get a localized new sound like the "Seattle" or "San Francisco" Sound. For that matter even the swapping back and forth that went on with punk from New York to Britain and then back to South Cali Hardcore.
More like "yeah that's the Aussie Metal, New Wave,or Grunge band."

I love Australian rock, especially AC/DC, Billy Thorpe, InXS, Goanna, Eurogliders, Split Enz/Crowded House, Midnight Oil, Men At Work, Jet and Wolfmother.

I also think Keith Urban is this generation's Andy Gibb. Will we lose him early too?

The Jon Bulter Trio is a great Band from down under.
They had to be good or the Police wouldn`t have asked them
too open up for them.

The only band you mentioned that I already knew was from Australia was Silverchair. But looking at a list, it looks like you guys have some bands I really dig on.

Cheers!
