All wars are fought over resources. Resources include a lot of things such as land, mineral wealth, food production, water, and even the control of people.

Despite some views that religion is the cause, this is a red herring. It remains, fundamentally, a resource issue. The IRA wanted territory. It happened that they were Catholic and the Unionists were Protestant.

Iraq is a good example of factions seemingly at war over religion, but in fact, it is over control of the mineral and oil resources, the water, power, and other territorial rights.

Israel. This struggle is clearly over resources. Namely, the entire state of Israel. If every Jew in Israel were to convert to Islam tomorrow, every formerly dispossessed Palestinian farmer would still seek to reclaim his land from his new Islamic brother and there would be a battle.

The Crusades were for territory first. The list is endless.

Wars have its own motive from different times in history. It is not true to say there's only ONE thing that all wars have been fought over. There's a difference between war's motives during the roman empire and during the present time. Wars are manifestation of a politico-economics situation.

They have been fought over religion (the Crusades), land (Alexander the Great), politics, money, philosophy(WWII), freedom(The American Revolution)....there is not really a good answer to that question.
